Apostle

Death Astonished Album: Orthodox Track 3

Listen

Notes

Ancient tradition holds that the Apostle John may have been allowed by God to remain alive on earth until Christ's return. This would be an incredible miracle as John would be over 2000 years old by now. I wrote this song and Apocalypse with that legend in mind - what if it were true?

This represents the beginning of the Apostle's journey and story of perseverance, endurance, and his epic and unwaivering faith in the One who sent him.

Lyrics

[Intro]
[Instrumental]

[Verse 1]
The road rolls on beneath my feet,
of dust and blood in equal share.
The cross behind me calls my name,
A golden crown awaits me there.

I left my nets, I left the shore,
The world I knew no longer mine.
The voice that thundered through my soul
Still bids me go into the world.

[Pre-Chorus]
I am not worthy of this flame,
Yet still it burns within my soul.
I walk by faith, and not by sight,
Sent forth with nothing but His word.

[Chorus]
I am Apostle - sent into the night,
Bearing a light I did not claim.
I am Apostle - marked by truth and light,
I live in Christ, I bear His name.

[Interlude]
[Instrumental - slow procession, chant undercurrent]

[Verse 2]
The cities slam their iron gates,
I shake their dust from tired feet
I speak of life beyond the grave,
They answer me with chain and sword.

The crowd once fed by holy bread
Now thirsts for blood in grace's stead.
Still I proclaim the risen King
Though death may come, I seek His face.

[Pre-Chorus]
Fear, like a serpent, grips my heart,
The night weighs heavy on my mind.
Yet in my weakness, His power speaks:
His strength made perfect in my strife.

[Chorus]
I am Apostle - sent into the storm,
No promise given but the cross.
I am Apostle - battered, scarred, and worn,
Counting all the world as loss.

[Bridge (chant cadence, solemn, rising)]
Not by silver, not by sword,
Not by nor crown nor earthly praise
We conquer only through the Lord,
By martyr’s breath and faithful ways.

[spoken]
Go into all the world
Teach the things I've taught you
Baptize the nations in my name
I am with you to the end,
you must endure

[Final Chorus (bigger, slower, crushing)]
I am Apostle - sent where no one else would go,
Through ash and flame, through doubt and pain.
I am Apostle for the faith, the world must know,
New life is born where seeds of truth are sown.

[Outro (clean chant / whisper)]
I am sent, I will remain.
To bear the word, and spread its flame
Until the end, His truth lives on
'Till time, at last, is born again

[Ending]
[Instrumental - fading chant, tolling bells, distant choir]
