Apocalypse is a Greek word. It doesn't actually mean "the end of the world," but rather a sense of revealing a once-hidden truth or person. The original title of the book of Revelation is "The Apocalypse of Jesus Christ," meaning that Jesus Christ is, at last, to be revealed to the world as true God and King. Of course, this would signify the end of the present age of sin and rebellion tempered by grace and salvation, but it is also a new beginning.
This song completes the Apostle's journey through time as he witnesses his ancient prophecy fulfilled. The world burns, kingdoms fall, judgement is executed. But the saints remain faithful, and at last, the Kingdom of God arrives.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
I have walked to the edge of years,
My hands are thin, my eyes are worn.
The truth once whispered in my youth
Now splits the sky, the coming storm
The seas convulse, the mountains bow,
The kings of dust hide with their gold.
I hear the earth begin to scream
Her labor pains have taken hold.
[Pre-Chorus]
This is not the end I feared,
Nor the end I'd hoped to see.
The veil is torn - the wound laid bare.
The Lamb stands crowned in majesty.
[Chorus]
Apocalypse, apocalypse - the world undone,
The scroll unsealed, the trumpets sound.
Behold, Apocalypse - Thy Kingdom come,
The faithful stand, thy will be done.
[Interlude]
[Instrumental - slow, immense, tectonic]
[Verse 2]
Behold, the beast in borrowed light,
Behold, the mark on head or hand.
The merchants weep, their kingdoms burn,
No throne remains that can withstand.
The stars fall silent from the void,
The moon runs red with ancient blood.
Still through the ash, I hear His voice
Calling His witnesses one by one.
[Pre-Chorus]
Woe to the earth and woe to the sea,
The devil knows his time is short.
Yet blessed are those who did not bend,
Who bore the cross, unto the end
[Chorus]
Apocalypse, apocalypse - the nations shake,
Their kings brought down to rule the dust.
Behold, Apocalypse - arise, awake,
The Judge is true, the LORD is just.
[Bridge (chant cadence, terrifying, reverent)]
Holy - Holy - Holy - is the Lord,
God Almighty, who was and is, and is to come
wrath and mercy now collide,
and Alpha meets Omega’s end in time.
Fallen, fallen
Babylon, the great is fallen
Babylon, the harlot is fallen
In one hour, her judgement is come
Come, Lord Jesus
[Final Chorus (slow, crushing, triumphant)]
Apocalypse, apocalypse - no veil remains,
No shadow left where lies may hide.
Behold, Apocalypse - through fire and flame,
The Lamb is crowned, joined by His Bride
[Outro (clean chant / whisper, almost peaceful)]
I was sent, and I remain
I bore the Word, and spread its flame
I saw the end, the latter rain
My time, at last, is born again
Even so,
Come, Lord Jesus.
[whispered]
Come, Lord Jesus
[Ending]
[Long instrumental decay - bells, choir, final unresolved chord resolving at the very end]
