Description / liner notes
A few weeks before wrapping production on Orthodox, I discovered an ancient piece of music called “The Oxyrhynchus Hymn.” Apparently, it was discovered in Egypt, and is the oldest known Christian hymn for which both lyrics and musical notation are preserved. The hymn is in ancient Greek and dates to the 3rd century AD.
Interestingly, this hymn is of theological importance as well. It explicitly mentions the Triune God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) in the lyrics many years before the council of Nicea. This is interesting because non-trinitarians like to claim that the doctrine of the Trinity was invented at Nicea. However, this hymn proves that it was around long before that.
After creating the album version in a style as close to traditional Byzantine chant as I could get, I had a few more ideas. A heavy version was the first, and it came out awesome, especially with the addition of female vocals in the classic “beauty and the beast” style.
Finally, I realized the hymn’s lyrics are basically “Hey, everyone shut up - we’re trying to praise God here! You can all say ‘Amen’ when we’re done.” And so, the final track “Shut Up” was born as a Gen-Z meets Rage Against The Machine style interpretation of the ancient hymn. It’s loud, it’s obnoxious, it’s in your face, and I make zero apologies for it. Enjoy!
