Description / liner notes

I happened onto something kind of magical with Ad Lumen Dei from Mors Stupebit, which is a majestic blending of centuries-old Gregorian chant and modern metal. I really wanted to try to catch that lightning in a bottle again, but also differently.

So this time, I looked to the East at Byzantine and Greek Orthodox tradition. They have their own ancient chant, and even a very different musical notation. This album is the result.

It’s very heavy, and sometimes very dark and intense - exactly the way I like it, with a cohesive concept binding it all together. It can be thought of as a service or liturgy of its own, but it also tells a story that can read like an abridged chronology of the Church throughout history, up to history’s end.

This album is dedicated, first and foremost, to my LORD and Saviour, Jesus Christ; and secondarily to the memory Brother Apollo (RIP), a monk of the Docheiariou Monastery at Mount Athos, Greece, who was also a world-renowned amateur radio operator (call sign SV2ASP/A) and a true friend to hundreds of thousands of radio amateurs around the globe. Well done, good and faithful servant.
